Philately In Brief

Philately is a term derived from Greek, comprising two words i.e. Philos (friend) and Atelia (liberation). This term was for the first time used by Herpin, aFrenchman, in 1864.

A hobby in collection stamps was developed in England and extended to the whole world, including Indonesia. The exploration of this new hobby has given rise to a curiosity to learn and search more about the history of stamps and other philatelic products as scientific object. This hobby is called philately, and the person who has this hobby is a philatelist.

Thus, a philatelist is actually a stamp expert. A stamp collector may not be regarded as philatelist unless supported by knowledge and experience in stamp properties. On the contrary, a philatelist does not necessarily collect stamps or possesses a huge collection of stamps. Nevertheless, in line with the current development, the term philatelist is used for both stamp expert and stamp collector.
